I’m curious why you feel since you are in a kayak you have to stick with a 7 inch. I kayaked seriously for a little over 4 years. Had an HB 899 si on there. Had I not gotten out of kayak fishing I would have put the Helix Mega 10 si on there. I’ve seen guys that have Helix 12 on their yaks. We all have a budget but if it is within your budget I would go with a 9 inch or bigger. Seven years back I could dissect the info on the 899 with no issues. Today....even though nothing is medically wrong with my eyes.....bigger screen is a must.

That Garmin 93sv would have fit the bill I think for 599.00 if you can find them still.

First I’d pick Humminbird just because of quality of SI and Di. Then ease of operation then if your lakes are on lake master card they are the best out there. Next pricing is pretty good on the 7. I have one on bow of my boat and I sit back quite a bit from it and can still see it pretty good though I would like to have a 9. And I’m no spring chicken with not the best eye sight. If maps aren’t a issue I agree the garmin 93 would be a good unit if you can still find one for that money.

I would go with the biggest helix unit I could afford ! Lake master mapping is hard to beat also!

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with the budget. Bigger screens means bigger price tag. Believe me I would love a huge screen but I don’t have the funds for it currently. Also by the time it’s mounted I will be sitting right at it.

Sounds like most agree on hummingbird mega unit. Curious though is Garmin better without the maps? I do fish some of the big lakes but most times fish smaller lakes I’m sure aren’t mapped.

Buy a used Helix, get a bigger screen and true DI. The down image on the Helix 7 is a composite image and not from a dedicated crystal in the transducer.

HELIX 7 SI units do not have a dedicated DI piezo in any generation ...

If DI is important to you stretch the budget into the HELIX 8 SI MEGA + GPS G3N ...

All HELIX have AutoChart Live ...
