Personally ... if I was going to spend $500 on a depth finder, I'd opt for DI & the biggest screen that money would get me. But, it might also depend on what styles/methods you use. It may also depend on where you intend to place the transducer.

You might also want to talk to Brian@BBGmarine (Member Sponsor Classifieds) and see what he suggests for your style of fishing & budget. I haven't dealt with him, myself, but I've heard a LOT of great reviews on his pricing, customer service, and shipping time.

You said GPS, does that mean mapping? 1' contours and such.
If a base screen is acceptable, look at the striker series by Garmin. Same transducers and pixel count, as the higher end units. Unless they've changed things.
I agree 100% with above statements of "as big as you can afford", and "call Brian at bbg". He's quite knowledgeable.
SI is good, as it can help too find things off to the side, then switch too DI to get an excellent view of the object. However, what you see is a combination of your eyes, how much time you've put into to adjusting the settings for that days conditions, the body of water, and the screen size.

I have to agree with this. I went from a garmin striker 9sv to a helix 7 mega si g3n and even with the smaller screen Iím way happier with the helix. The image quality isnít even comparable between the 2, I never got near as good images with the garmin. I got mine new on eBay with a map card for around $580
