Yes, just go in unit and turn off sonar.

I bought the Navionics Mobile App ($20/yr) to use with my phone when I was fishing with my buddies and we were marking spots. It has so much detail on my lakes I bought a suction phone mount and run it on my boat as a supplement to my DF/GPS unit.
You can view it for free but to be able to mark and save waypoints you need to buy the App.

    A point to note ...

Even if you don't connect an xducer to older unit - an ethernet connection would still allow some limited Sonar sharing to the older unit from the HELIX g1 ...

I use the Navionics app also. I run it on a tablet. Good information on the app. I use it to pick an area to fish by water depth

I am currently using a 998 for mapping at console with a Gen1 Helix 10 SI GPS model as Rickie described. I am able to share the transom transducer connected to the Helix 10 for 2D and imaging source (I only use the 2D for the 998). I also have an external GPS receiver at transom that is shared by both.

I am using my old 1199 SI for mapping . Helps to have a external heading sensor ( GPS antenna with built in compass ). That way you know where boat is pointed even sitting still , no more donut hole . I run a Humminbird 12 '' mega SI over sterring wheel
linked to it . Beside the 1199 , I run a 1242 xsv Garmin with livescope on the bow .
