Default best fish finder for the money

since I didn't get any hits about an existing thread ill start one.

I haven't bought a finder in several years and most of the last couple I just done without. that's not true I have used the vex. several times for depth. anyhow im in the search. man there are a lot of features to consider these days. up down side and horizonical views and all. lol I would love to have side scan but not sure its in the budget. since the finder isn't something I use religiously I don't need much of a unit really. that being said, around 300 bucks is what I figure its worth to me.

thanks for any and all opinions

I've had lots of b/w 2d sonar units, but never really liked them all that much so I just basically used them to tell me depth. A few year ago I bought a color DI unit 5" (Lowrance Elite 5DSI) and loved that unit. Broke a pin in the connection socket & had to replace it with something else (out of production at that time). Caught the Hook 7 on sale and been using it since. Still don't care much for 2d sonar, preferring Down Image .... but, I can combine the two with this unit, if I want.
Now the Hook2 series is out, but I'm not sure what the difference between the two generations is ... but the pricing is close to your limit.

If I didn't really know what unit I wanted, but knew my max budget .... I'd probably contact Brian@BBGmarine and talk to him. Seems everyone that has done business with him has been pleased with the price, speed of delivery, customer service, and his overall knowledge of the units.

Me, personally, I wouldn't go back to a 5" screen (or smaller), especially with a DI or SI capable unit ...

I've found some good deals on the Bass Boat Central classifieds. The bass guys upgrade often.

I've always been a Lowrance man, as well (since back in the 1970's).

I'd still contact Brian@BBGmarine and consult with him about the Hook2 units. He'll be able to tell you all the details/functions of these units. But, again I stress that unless this unit is going to be right close to your face ... go with the 7" screen.
