Wink Out with the old. In with the new.

So now that the boat is in good shape and tested on the water, thanks to this website. its time to do some upgrading. First on the list has to be the electronics. The charter and depthfinder it came with is a small lowrance 4 di. So small i cant hardly see it. I have probably watched 100 videos on depth finders. It seems like I'm leaning more toward a helix model. I'm wanting to get one that has side and down imaging. This is just a beginner boat for me as i have never had one and wanted to start small and move up to bigger one once i got comfortable on the water. So all the stuff i am buying now will be transferred to the new boat next year. I'm having to go piece by piece as funds become available but want good quality stuff. i was thinking a 10 would be a good choice? Any input or direction would be much appreciated.

The prices are such a dramatic change for screen size its ridiculous. 1" extra display is not $300 worth of technology.

I think if I was buying new with nothing to compare to, I'd tape the screen of a laptop up to limit it to the same size screen as the unit I was looking at and sit it on my boat. Pull up an image of the unit and scale it to fit the taped off display area and see just how big and easy to read it is.

2 smaller units makes much more sense to me than one bigger one the way they are on the prices. Buy a 7,8 or 9" unit and you can add another later to handle only mapping, DI/2D etc.

The helix 10 mega is a great choice for a unit! Remember as you go bigger in screen on the helix models, the resolution increases (better picture).

7,8 and 9" are all same res. I guess if your dropping a small fortune on a 10 or 12" you would gain slightly higher resolution.

Going to pick up a helix10 on Friday. I have a lowrance 4 di right now. Think I will move that to the bow till I can afford a 7 or 8 for the bow.
