    Default Humminbird 999 screen locking/freezing up - SD card/card slot/snap shot issue???

    Hello

I'm looking for help on troubleshooting humminbird 999 screen locking/freezing up. The unit will lock up on 2d/di/si view and sometimes si view. Then, will not respond to any button pushing, including trying to power it off.

    My system:
    999 SI
    959 DI
    terrova I-pilot link
360 bow mount and GPS heading puck

All networked together with 5 port switch.

I just recently replaced cranking battery (upgraded to bigger size) and also ran wire to connect directly to battery (with inline fuse). Still locking up. Unit locked up will I was testing everything out (while in the garage) after rewiring straight to the battery.

I decided I had better upload waypoints, etc. from previous trip and got a "upload failed" message. Tried it again, and got the same fail message. Switched card to the other slot and upload was successful.

    Questions:

Could using a faulty SD card slot cause the locking up issue?
What about the amount of snap shots stored to a card? I have another card that stays in the unit that has 1300-ish snapshots on it. Its an 8GB card and shows that still has 7GB+ of room left. Unit does hang up a little when scrolling through views and gets to the view where you can view the snapshots on the unit. Should I clean off the snapshots saved on the card? (I have them stored on computer)

I started using the other card slot ( the one that I was using and got the failed upload) last year because the card went in a little farther than the other slot - in both slots, the card snapped in like it should but you could see the difference between the 2 slots. If I remember correctly, this is about the time that the screen locking up started.

Anyone have any thoughts? This is driving me nuts!!! I plan to go back to suing the other card slot on the next outing.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ty (Nory)

Ty, no expert by any stretch but I would save every thing off the unit and make sure on computer that you have it. Then I’d do a factory reset. I have had mine freeze up and that solved my problem. Also running 2 cards with snapshots turned on could be part of the problem. Sometimes the processors just get overloaded and their brain kinda freezes up. And yes you could have a bad slot.

    Cray,

I do have everything saved to my computer, so I'm good there. I should have clarified - I use one card for uploading/downloading and another for snapshots. I never have both cards in at the same time. If I do a factory reset, I'm assuming I will have to reconfigure the networking setup as well?

Honestly I don’t have the answer for that one. I would wait for Rickie to see this. I’m sure he knows the answer. I don’t have anything networked so never faced that issue.

I recently had a card slot failure on a Gen 1 Helix SI model. If I inserted a card in the RH slot, it would freeze. If I left the card out then it would seem to work. I can't think of a correlation but later, the boat icon froze on chart view. Had to send it back to factory and replaced a circuit board.

It might be a good idea to get the unit back to basics ...because any number of things can cause these kind of issues (bad SD cards, corrupt Waypoints, gremlins, confused IP addresses, etc) ...

*Export the Waypoints and import into HBPC and check for any bad dates, bad coordinates, duplicate Waypoints ...
*Format Nav Directories under the Setup tab ...
    *Disconnect ethernet ...
*Restore Defaults under the Setup tab ...
    *Test ...

Thanks for all of the responses. I will start looking for corrupt waypoints tonight and I will use the other card slot until after this weekend. Then I will restore defaults if needed.

    Thanks again,
    Ty (Nory)
