Default Troubleshoot Humminbird 360 and Minn Kota Ulterra Interference

I need some help trying to figure out what is going on between the Ulterra and Humminbird Solix 12 with 360 Imaging. Take a look at the screenshots below. The sharp, clear 360 images are when the trolling motor is NOT engaged. It is on, but I have not engaged the motor. Once I engage the motor and we start moving around, the picture has a sorta of light tan haze over it.

One of our friends said the problem may be with the negative terminal on the battery. It may not have a strong connection and could be causing some kind of interference. I don't have a background in electrical problems and am completely stumped. Any help would be appreciated.

    • picture 1: engaged trolling motor and you can see about a 1/4 of the screen that is fuzzy
    • picture 2: trolling motor not engaged
    • picture 3: trolling motor engaged
    • picture 4: trolling motor not engaged
    • picture 5: trolling motor engaged

RFI is random in occurance ...

It could be caused by worn TM brushes, bent TM shaft, ground fuse blown in TM head ...
TM wires too close to Sonar cables, common on board charger back feed ... Etc ...

Sometimes it helps narrow rabbit holes down by removing the Sonar xducer (360 in your case) and test it in the water far away from the TM ...

If the RFI goes away = the RFI is encroaching directly around the TM somewhere ...
If the RFI is still present = the RFI is encroaching thru power wires somewhere else ...

HB is also a great resource for tracking down RFI ... 1-800-633-1468

Thanks very much for the info. Will try to get on the water this week to start trying to run down the interference.

What has cleared up all my issues is I run a ground wire from my trolling motor skeg to the negative side of my starting battery. Any ground wire under the front that goes to the starting battery has worked for me. I mount my SI transducer to the trolling motor and run my ground wire along with the transducer cable knock on wood this has fixed all my problems.

If you are using the built in transducer in the Ulterra it does not support side or down imaging. If you look up Ulterra on you tube there are several work arounds for this problem.
