Default Newbie crappie fisherman electronics question

Hey guys, I'm new the forum and have a few questions for the experts out there. I have a Tracker Grizzly 1648 aluminum boat with a 25 horse tiller motor. I bought the boat a few years ago just for duck hunting. Last spring I bought a trolling motor for the boat and started crappie fishing quite a bit and had really good luck fishing structure visible with the eye for pre-spawn/spawning crappie. This year, I want to take it to the next level and buy a fish finder to locate structure/crappie. I do not want to spend over $400 on a fish finder. I have been doing a lot of research and have pretty much decided on the Humminbird Helix 5 CHIRP GPS G2. My main style off fishing is vertical jigging and casting.

What is everyone's opinion, good or bad on this fish finder for my current setup? Any other advise would be greatly appreciate!

Thank you in advance for your input!

If you can adjust your price to about $500 I would recommend the the Helix 7 g3. This unit will come with a lot better 2d due to the dual spectrum low Q transducer and bigger screen.

My advice to you is to get at the least a 7" screen what ever sonar you buy. You will thank me later for this advice.
Be safe and good luck fishing

Get a Helix 7 if at all possible. Bigger is better!

Good advice given above. I bought a Helix 5 SI unit a couple years ago for my kayak. Last year I bought a Helix 10 for my bass tracker. By spring I will get a 7 Mega down imaging unit for the frt of the Tracker. I could use the 5" on the frt, but it is difficult to make out what you are looking at. It is hard enough to see detail on the kayak, and that is with the screen very close to my face/eyes. It would not be useful on my Tracker, in my opinion.

Garmin Striker 7SV has the most features in your price range. Not the best of everything, but it does have everything.

IMO, GPS and good 2d sonar are most important. You can get by without DI and SI, they are mainly for convenience.

You are the second person to recommend this model. I am now doing some research on it. I found a used on for sale in my price range. If anyone has any experience with the Garmin Striker 7SV, what is your opinion on it versus the Helix 5 DI GPS other than a bigger screen size? 2D, down view, and side view clarity? Ease of use?

    Thank You!

The Helix will have better DI, as well as the ability to run contour maps. The Striker has SI and better 2D, but can only plot basic paths and mark waypoints with its GPS, it can not run a contour map.

Ease of use is a wash, the only thing that could tip it either way is if already have some experience with already with either brand. If you don't, the learning curve for both is similar.

What ever you decide on make darn sure it has SI especially for Crappie fishing. Try and find suspended Crappies out in the middle of nowhere with out it. Even finding Cribs or brush piles with 2d or Di takes all day running back and forth SI one pass and you have them all.
