What size wires should I use to connect unit to battery on an elite 5?

Same here on 16’ jon boat from back to the front. No more power it draws, your good to go. I have never had any problems with 16 gauge.

Good marine grade Wire is very reasonable ... use bigger than you think you may need and don't share power with anything else on the same wire pair ...

And use twisted pairs. If you can't buy it, its easy to make. This will help eliminate any possibilities of interference.
