    Default Hand Held GPS unit

I have two boats, my bass boat and a kayak when I`m in the kayak I would like to be able to set waypoints on spots I find when fishing and then manually enter them into my Humminbird on my bass boat.

Can any one recommend a small hand held gps device I can get?

I must be able to see the coordinates so I can then enter them later. Just not sure if all units show that?

    Thank you for any help!

Check out the Garmin gps. They have several to choose from. I use a Garmin 64csx for hunting and backpacking. It not only picks up our US satellites but also glonas (Russian) satellites and is super accurate when saving waypoints. Read up on
what maps you want as most all topographical maps with Garmin have to be purchased online and downloaded into your unit you decide to purchase. Garmin also has some higher cost gps’s loaded with various topo maps. Do your research online for the unit you want as well as mapping. The mapping software can set you back as much as the gps if you travel to different states to fish, hunt, or backpack.

Thank you for that information, I will look on line and do some research.

I have another question if you can help?

Do I need the mapping software of say the lake I`m on or can I just set a way point of my location on any given lake without the lake map software and then transfer those coordinates to my fish finder graph at a later date?

No,,you don’t need any mapping software for lakes..and most software doesn’t do a good job of any,,showing lake bottoms and topographical features. I know there is a way to transfer your waypoints via computer and storage cards..but have never done it myself and can’t help you on that question. Sorry .

You might check out Garmin chat forums as well as ask on the bbc forum as it also has a Humminbird forum as well as google the question and search the web if somebody here doesn’t answer.

Back when I first got Autochart Pro, 1st edition, you could transfer waypoints via google earth. Just had to make sure both were using the same gps format. Once the points are on google earth, convert and transfer to your autochart pc program. I don't remember the specifics, but once I figured out both needed to be the same gps format, everything went smoothly. You can also find stuff on google earth, mark it, and transfer those point to your sonar unit. Then go check them out while on teh water. Saves a ton of time exploring new water.

My favorite hand held GPS is the Garmin Etrex. plain screen or color either one. I think one with an electronic compass is important as a cheaper one without it will point everywhere as you slow the boat to fish. An electronic compass will always point at your waypoint even while sitting still. They used to be around 200 bucks but you can still find new ones on EBay for 50 to 60 dollars.

I used a Garmin GPSMap 76 for a long time before I got a unit with mapping. You can find them like new on eBay for less than $100. I had that thing offshore in my kayak for three straight years and it never missed a beat.

I have 2 gps 12s that I have been using for the past 30+ years, they are very reliable, easy to use if you can find one, most hand held ones are out of date. Look on eBay.
