Help with sonar
Looking for help adjusting the sensitivity on my Lowrance Elite 5x Chirp. Literally any input from anyone who can explain their opinion is appreciated.

I'm not familiar with that model (I assume it's not a color display) but what I generally do is turn the sensitivity up until the screen in mostly black and then turn it back down until you're comfortable looking at the display. Don't turn it down so far that there are no specks here and there. I'd say you've got it about right in the pic. You may have to up the sensitivity in deeper water. All that said, lots of folks just set the newer units on auto and let it ride.

Have you tried using Low & Medium Chirp (I see you have it on High Chirp).
Personally, I'd turn the 2d sonar (with the finger painting images) off and turn on the Down Image, then really "see" what the heck is actually down there. I had a Elite 5DSI unit (until I broke it) after decades of 2d sonar, and when I got it and figured out how to use it I swore I'd never bother with 2d again. Now I have a Hook 7 unit, and the screen has never had 2d images on it while on the water.
Now while it is true that you go from pixels/fish icons/arches with a 2d, to white dots with a DI .... you very quickly learn to notice those white dots more, especially when there's a scattered group of them out in the middle of nowhere. You may even get lucky and scan over a place where they just so happen to be scanned in just the right way, and end up with something like this on your screen :
That image was taken on my Elite 5DSI unit, and I fully expect to get my Hook 7 unit dialed in where I can see many more screenshots like this one.
