Default Help with, which Lowrance and transducer?

I am considering a Lowrance on the bow with an Ultrex. I have a different brand and with the exception of seeing some images on a Lowrance my uncle has, I have zero experience with Lowrance. (Disclaimer- I am not looking to start a brand bashing thread.) I just want to get advice and gather information.

I would like to have mapping, sonar and down scan capability at a minimum. I am considering side scan... Knowing this will be installed on an ultrex, is there a particular transducer that I need to be looking at? (Some of the Lowrance transducers appeared to be too long to be mounted on the Ultrex?) Touch screen is not a must but a 9” screen is preferred. The upper end units (carbon? are not a must). Are there additional components that are are required to achieve down scan and or side scan with Lowrance products?

Recommendation of model for unit and transducer?

I'm no expert but I do run Lowrance units. I have a Terrova with ipilot and use a Lowrance HDI transducer for downscan and regular 2D sonar at the trolling motor. They make a trolling motor mount to protect the transducer. Check out precision sonar for an adapter to help manage the cable. I do not get sidescan on my bow unit unless I am reading the networked unit at the console which is reading the transducer mounted on the transom. I did have a LSS2 transducer back there but updated to a Carbon unit so I now have a 3D set up. If you look on the precision sonar link it looks like they are also making a mount for the total scan transducer now, which may give you side scan at the bow but my understanding is the images would be blurred when the trolling motor is moving. I had two gen 2 9" HDS touch units networked together but updated one to a Carbon this year. I still have my old Gen 2 9" touch sitting in the garage with LSS2 transducer if your interested in it.

Im with GoFish I'm no expert but I have lowrance units on my boat. I have pretty much the same setup as GoFish on the bow of my boat. The hdi transducer gives you 2d and down scan and fits really easily on a trolling motor. The total scan transducer, which is a lot bigger, will give you everything 2d, down scan, and side scan. I have seen trolling motor brackets for them but have never delt with them. I've never used side scan on the bow but I do have it t the console. All my units are ran through an lss2 box with lss1 transducer since the ones at the console are gen2 non touch units I have to have the box. The gen2 touch models that GoFish has would not have to have the box cause the structure scan module is built in. As far as if you were wanting to connect it to your trolling motor I can't help much there since my trolling motor is an old motorguide.

Thanks guys! This helps. The issue with having a separate box to utilize side scan or down scan was a question. I will look at the model of the units you both have talked about. It may lead to more questions . I want to gather all the information I can before buying. Thanks again!

That's exactly what I did. I spent the better part of a year researching everything I could about them. Ive only had them about 6 months now but after all the research I did it made it very easy to understand when I did get to start using them. Just remember gen2 touch and newer you don't need the extra box but gen2 non touch and gen1 you would need the extra box for down/side scan
