    Default Chart speed

So on my old fishfinders ( 2d with mostly the fish symbol on lol) I have always up my chart speed highest it will go. I now have one of these new fancy things and was wondering what do you set your chart speed on? If it was always best to have fastest setting they wouldn’t give you the option I guess.

Match with speed of boat is what I do. Gives you better detail and you can make out what you are looking at better. My 2 cents.

Thanks. Is there a chart for how fast you are going compared to the chart speed number? Or is it just something you learn?

For SI and DI Chart speed matching boat speed gives the best results ... This is simply because the Sonar beams in SI and DI are very thin front to back ...so the ratio of data collected in a single imaging sound pulse ("Ping") equates to the measure of forward travel in the boat ... (think of how a MRI takes slice pictures of the human body and then "stacks" them back together to make a "whole body" picture) ...

2d Chart speed is a different animal and should be maxed out to get the echoes to "stretch" across the 2d display ...

Think of the chart speed numbers as mph. If you are going 3 mph, set chart speed on 3. If your at the bow barely moving, chart speed at 1-2 will give better down images and side images.

the only exception I have found was with Garmin.....set on highest speed (Ultra), DownVu and SideVu appear less "squished"

    Edit: Squished, not stretched

I don’t have time to check but figured I could ask. If showing split screen on a Helix unit can the chart speeds be different for the two images displayed?

Unfortunately no - Chart speed is "global" .... meaning all 3 Sonar screens (2d/DI/SI) are affected the same ...
