I'm looking at the Terrova or XI5 80lb, 60" with spot lock. The Terrova is $210 more than the XI5 with the quotes I've received from sponsors here. Is the Terrova worth the extra money?
From what I've read they seems they are very similar if they work properly, but Minn Kota's service receives much better reviews. That alone gives me pause on a big purchase, but $210 is a few TM parts. Anything else remarkable between the two?
Anybody with experience with both, and feedback?
Eric

I have an xi5 and it's been great, couple quirky things occasionally but I love the thing. I thought it would be harder to get used to the lack of display on the remote, but now I'm glad the remote isn't bigger.
Can't speak to the terrova.
Once it ramped up to full speed when I was trolling at 0.8. Put it back in manual, reset the autopilot/cruise control and worked fine since. When you start the "cruise control" it sets you at 1mph instead of current speed, which you could start at current speed.
When jogging backwards while "anchored" it'll get a little wonky trying to figure it out for a moment, but nothing obnoxious or crazy.

Garmin and MinnKota "talk", as do Lowrance and MotoirGuide. If you want to tap your screen and troll to a spot, or automatically follow contour lines then this is important. I dont think you can switch the brands and have connectivity. I chose MG because I run Lowrance. I too have had the MG ramp up to full speed while trolling at 1.5 mph. It did it maybe 3 or 4 times last year. Also, the MG in Anchor Lock seems to fight itself in a no-wind and no-current situations. My boat is constantly moving back and forth trying to stay on spot. It has no problems and will hold my 23' skiff well in wind or current. I have ran both systems, iPilot and Xi5. It has been 3 or so years since I had the MK but I do not recall any issues with it. They are both good, but the handheld remote on the MK in my opinion is far better because there is a LED screen to tell you what mode you are in and your speed, IIRC. I do miss that feature greatly on my MG but I wanted it to talk to the Lowrance for those extra features. If not for wanting the connectivity to my Lowrance, I would have the MK even at the higher price. The screen on the remote is worth it. Hope this helps!

I would only add that if you have the pinpoint gateway with Lowrance, you get functions of the TM on screen like heading lock, speed settings and so forth. Since your running garmin and that's not an option, the Terrova would probably make you happier. It's a little hard to figure out what settings you are on when there's no screen indicator with the xi5. Not impossible but certainly annoying.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.
