Default Christmas is coming and I need help shopping!

For me personally, I have come to the conclusion that I will never master SI. For starters, my 798 screen size is too small. Second, my brain just can't interpret the image. Third, ALL my fishing is done from bow with a Terrova so SI DI transducers don't work up there really without a bunch of DIY mods. Lastly, even if it did as a spider rigger what difference does it make if my baits are already 36 feet past the image as I push forward. Knowing what you already passed is ok I guess but knowing what is coming is the ultimate goal. I use this "historical" info , along with depth and speed and waypoints to make smarter choices but forward scanning/360 has got to be the answer for me moving forward. So someone tell why I should purchase anything other than a 360 and the cheapest big screen with sonar and GPS only. Or another way to ask=Why upgrade to a SI/DI with Mega Technology if forward scan is all you plan to use? And if you do upgrade where should the ducers be mounted.

Now I do crank out the back as well as drift for cats in reverse so I do some benefit there but it is minor compared to my spider rigging time.

I use my 360 almost exclusively, a BIG screen is key no matter what you are using if you are looking for definition. I asked this same question back some time ago and was told that the SI/DI units would show the 360 images better and I bought into that. Running a 1198 side by side with 1199 I could not tell any difference really, 99 is brighter. Have sold the 98 and looking to pick up a Helix when someone upgrade to the Mega. Size matter when it comes so enhanced images, just a fact.
Do you need SI/DI, no but you can find good used units with those capabilities fairly cheep now, like 1199s.

    HELIX 2d G1 units in 9, 10, 12 and HELIX 2d G2N units in 7, 9, 10, 12 can use 360 ... it doesn't have to be an expensive SI or DI unit ...

    Bigger screen will help ...

Thanks guys. Good to hear. Rees how/where do you have your 360 mounted. If I remember I believe you also run a Terrova. Does that mean you have a seperate mount for the 360.

Let me see if I understand the logic here. Buy a 360 to see out in front of the boat. 360 can "see" 100+ feet. Why would you mount it to the trolling motor?
If the 360 is mounted to the TM, the TM has to be deployed to use the transducer. Do you deploy TM when back trolling?

If the 360 is mounted to the transom it can be used all the time under 15mph(?). It will see that 20' to the bow and keep going beyond to see where you are going. Why would anybody ever mount a 360 to the bow of the boat, trolling motor? Not too mention that it can't be mounted to some trolling motors and you must use a separate contraption to hang it over the bow. Why? Now if you did mount it to the bow/tm and you want to back troll that 360 is seeing from the bow past the transom to see where you are going. Makes the most sense to me to mount the 360 on the transom.

Look at Garmin Panoptix. This is supposedly live sonar you can put on your troller up front and see live your bait being reeled in to the boat and fish following or attaching it. I dont have one but sounds like an awsome concept.

On the TM is just a nice clean compact way to mount it on the bow. When spider rigging Mounting at the bow puts you in the center of your 360 screen instead of 20 feet in front of the center if its mounted at the transom. PLus if you pushing your 16 foot rods your bait is now 36 feet ahead of your 360 image center. I agree you do lose 360 during high speed trolling unless you fabricate a bow mount that is not on the TM which of course adds more clutter up front. Not a real perfect spot really.

Can you use the 360 with a 1159 combo without SI or DI.
