Default Couple of Helix 10 questions

    1. Getting a GPS signal seems to take a long time, like 15 minutes; is this normal for the internal GPS on these units? My 598 with an internal GPS hooks up in like 3 minutes, 5 max.
The accuracy reads usually within 30-50', according to the GPS screen, and that seems a bit generous as well. I'd have to go in to a recording or 2 and check and see how many I'm hooked in to at a given time. Not expecting single digit accuracy but 50' seems high on first glance.

    2. Blended DI width from the SI beams; is there a chart or formula or diagram anywhere that shows what the difference in coverage is between narrow, medium and wide? Or how it relates to the width of the standard 2d cone of coverage for instance? Some standard rule of thumb? I've seen a "basic settings" for HB units made up by Doug V. and I think it states to start on the wide setting. I've been running on the medium setting (tried narrow, never saw anything) and very seldom see much of anything on the DI view, even in the triple view window with obvious fish or structure returns on the 2d. If the wide setting is so wide that its overlapping the SI, what use is it, if its not under the boat pretty much? I will try the wide setting on last night's recordings and see if it makes a difference there, haven't tried wide on the water yet.
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.

GPS signal should not take long unless inside the garage or high trees all around blocking view to the sky ...

Sometimes inadequate power can cause GPS issues ...

If you have wired straight to a known good battery and used 12 gauge or heavier wire ... and you have tried Restore Defaults under the Setup tab ... And still have GPS connection issues ... Call HB ... 1-800-633-1468

The DI view in the HB core series SI units is computer generated from the SI data (because there is no DI piezo in the SI xducer) ...

The "DI Width" setting under the Sonar tab tells the SI unit how much of the total SI data to generate into the DI view ...

"DI Width Narrow" tells the SI unit to display only those echoes common in the left and right SI beams = basically the SI beams overlap under the boat ...

"DI Width Wide" tells the SI unit to display all echoes in the left and right SI beams ...

"DI Width Medium" is somewhere in between ...

Thanks for the prompt input as usual, Rickie. I've just played back 4 recordings from yesterday and I'm not sure what I was thinking, perhaps the previous trip, but I had 7 yellow satellite's and 2 gray, HDOP was a 1.00 with a 17' error, which as I read it, is excellent for everything. Perhaps it was early on getting the signal that it was the greater margin for error that I referred to and was stuck in my head.

I should have checked the recording's before I posted my question, my mistake.

The unit is wired to a new 18 amp hour battery, using only the original wires from the unit itself, how long is that, like 6'? I have it bolted to the terminals of the battery, all connections clean and shrink wrapped where possible, voltage is over 12.5 at the same time as the recordings. Reminder, I have it hooked up portable so don't have a lot of the potential issues that others have.

You, Sir, are a veritable encyclopedia of answers for dummies like me. Thanks for all you contribute to this board.

I've been playing with the width of the "blended DI" and your information makes perfect sense. I'm most interested presently in the what's just gone under the boat or just off to either side by a few feet, rather than the entire contents of the SI beams. I think I'll work with medium for a while; I don't count on the DI view much as a rule. Thanks again for your knowledge.

Most users with HB SI units agree with you on the Blended DI ...
