Did you find a chart or some way to determine an initial setting or are you just experimenting and going from there?

I used this chart. Then being I have a 1600 lb boat with a shallow draft I assumed I needed the least setting.

Yes, now I remember. I am still having issues with spot lock and Minn Kota technician mentioned not using the minus 2 setting as it would slow the response down (good) but may let it drift too far from the spot (bad). Using the first negative setting should probably work. I was using minus 2 but have now gone back to minus 1 and will see how that works. Wish my dealership had advised me on the size as I have an 18 foot shallow water boat and bought an 80 pound thrust 24 volt trolling motor.

Well, I am starting to figure it out. Turns out my 18' shallow water center console boat weighs 1,000 pounds and my E-Tec 115 is 400 pounds. Count all the rest of the rigging and fuel and I am not at 1,750 pounds. So--it appears I am way over thrust requirements for my Ulterra at 80 pounds thrust and 24 volt system. If I use the least boat scale of -2 it will not move erratically but the trade off is the "wander" makes it a 10-15 foot spot lock. Darn it for not doing more investigation and assuming the dealership would recommend what I would need.

when it comes to how much thrust you actually need don't forget to factor in a windy day. I had a 50 on my 17' glass and in the wind it would barely move it into the wind, an 80 cured that problem.

Well, looks like I get to start all over. Ulterra had a problem stowing and tried to stow 90 degrees from the cradle. Broke the belt. Took the boat and motor to an authorized Minn Kota Service center 150 miles away. They are to review my last several months of problems with a focus on repairing the stowing belt, investigating the overt gear noise in turning the motor, and lastly, figure out why spot lock won’t work correctly. There may be some issues in the installation so it may not be all on Minn Kota. Darn, I already miss fishing but have great expectations concerning the repair and remediation of my multiple issues.

Good news. They are replacing everything mentioned. Parts ordered and expected shortly. Not sure why they were problematic but I am extremely pleased with Minn Kota’s focus on warranty and service. I knew I had some issues but did not expect the issues to require complete replacement. As former military I keep my gear in good shape with an emphasis on preventative maintenance although there is not a lot of opportunity on the TM as it is mostly self contained. Can’t wait to see how spot lock responds. Thx everyone for your comments and help.

Well I bought a 2017 ultrex with I-pilot in March. Installed it myself. It was such an improvement over any other TM I've ever had I was very happy. But I noticed when I hit spot lock it would back my boat up 15' from where it hit the button. It did not mater if I had the speed on low or not when I hit it. On I-pilot mode the TM would work itself to death trying to stay on course even on a calm day. I called MK nice lady sent me a new head. I replaced it. It works perfectly now. Keeps me within five feet of where I lock it. Pilot mode works great too.
