Just use the tail off the Zipper Worm that Snake River makes. If I am using the #2 size hook for big Crappie I use the entire tail minus the little ball on the end. If I have soldered the #4 or #6 size hook then I am using the last 2/3 of the tail minus the little ball on the end. What I try to achieve is just have about a quarter inch lure below the hook so when the fish strikes they get metal in their upper mouth.

MCG1 This video shows the Pinman lure action with the Wax Worm imitation and how much of the lure is below the hook. You can make this lure using a #2 size hook for large Crappie or using a #4 or $6 size hook. Hope that helped some.

I learned that trick years ago by trial and error. I wanted the glossy powder paint finish instead of painting the Pinman with model car paint. My first attempts with powder paint had stuck to the lure but had a fuzzy type appearance at the top. I tried to just solder the lure longer before dipping it in the powder paint and it was so hot the heated shell would always come off the hook. You have to use the gold hook and just solder the hook to the shell first. Sprinkle your powder paint(s) onto the soldered shell. If it does not completely melt then just touch the backside of the lure lightly with the soldering iron a few times. You will see it begin to melt the paint. That is when I remove the soldering iron and let it finish melting. Ten minutes later you can paint on the eye or any design on the lure.
