Default Always nice when I can confirm a lure design's usefulness

Hybrid (Frankenstein) lure creation is my game and the only reason I fish. Catching fish on them give me insight as to what fish bite more often via lure characteristic associations. Some designs prove not as effective, others way more effective catching most fish species in different sizes.

For example, the thin tail grub is at the top of the list of best designs:

The combination of tail flutter even at rest is what I believe key in provoking strikes. (Note the three species).

The cone tail grub is another subtle action lure:

This year I decided to try darker colors for my best lure designs and found that they did as well.

Surprising was catching fish on a fat-tail grub:

Note the difference in size between front and back. The lure wobbles with slight changes in retrieve speed and has done very well this year.

The first time I connected grub bodies (after removing the curl tails), I never thought the design would get strikes. Man was I wrong!

It catches fish even wacky rigged on a jig head:

Another idea I wanted to try was connecting a flat body to a curl tail:

I had bags of French Fry stick lures stored and figured a way to use them. The design confirmed that fish don't need round bodies to strike.

There are many more and maybe I'll post more depending on interest.

Keep doing what your doing. It's getting the fish. Do you always use unpainted heads?

Dollfly I found out for over many years it doesn’t make any difference if the jig head is painten or not to the fish I believe the only reason why the jigs or painten it is to catch fisherman.

Stopped using painted heads decades ago. Less distraction from the lure. My buddy and I average anywhere from 76 fish (today) to 185 fish (one day in late spring) and neither of us use painted heads.

I agree. A lot of fishing lures are made to catch fishermen.

I read a article a while ago where a guy that poured lead head jigs and sold them was telling that at first he was not painting eyes on the jigs he was selling. The jigs were selling so-so, but a lot of people buying the jigs asked about why he did not paint eyes on the jig heads.

He decided to do a comparison of his jig heads. He fished some of his jig heads without eyes and some he painted eyes on the jig head. He found no difference in the numbers of fish he caught between those with eyes and those without eyes.

But, since customers were asking for jig heads with eyes he decided to make that an option in the jig heads he was selling. He indicated his sales of jig heads with eyes were far greater than the jig heads without eyes.

So his conclusion was that jig heads with eyes were much more important to anglers than it was to the fish.

That goes for most lures sold. Designing/making my own lures has proven beyond a doubt that unconventional lure designs with the right action and retrieve do far better than many of those marketed as specific to a fish species. I can't be limited to lures like those when there are so many others that catch fish.

The Crappie Magnet is one of the most versatile lure exceptions as my partner demonstrates every time we fish. Of the over 70 fish (four species) we caught today, he kept up with me fish for fish and refuses to use anything else and in only one color to boot! I call his choice BBB for Bob's Boring Bait LOL. As for me - I got to have the variety as exemplified above and maybe, just sometimes, different fish bite different lures better at different times on the same day.
