Spoonminnow, You hit the nail on the head when you said "Having the right materials to work with aid in an unlimited imagination"...........That is me my friend. When it comes to lurecraft and fishing I am always dreaming of the next challenge. God said "Brains" and I thought He said "Trains" so I was standing in the wrong line and I missed them both. I found out I was in the lovetofishforcrappieline and I never looked back. I am thankful to all of my friends here on crappie dot com for all of their helpful advice over these last 14 years. As my 1st official random act of kindness I want to mention a few who have been especially helpful to me on this site: Slab, Spoonminnow, "G", Snake River, Special K, H2oHammer, JamesDean, Skiptomylu, Skeetbum, Chaunc, CrappiePappy, Mr. Crappie, DB4D and Richard Gene the fishing machine. There are so many more that I could name but If I did not mention YOUR NAME charge it to my head and not to my heart.

Ship, you have a way with words that warms the heart and like you fully appreciate the contributions on c.com. Few other forums have the participation or those willing to compare notes and let bias take a back seat to open minded discussion, possibilities and most important - wonder.

That photo was taken in the rain Bob. Just wait until you see sunshine on them. The "Re-Liberated Perch" is awesome. All I can say is "Oh my God!" Why did it take so long for someone to tell me about Worm and Chunk paint. I have a supply of very fine oil paint brushes from when I got into oil painting. I saw many of Special K's artistic drawings of crappie. I am going to try and do artistic drawings on some crappie lures. Seems like a whole new world of creative thoughts is going through my head. There will be a 6.5 crappie who sees one of them and says ...."Let me open my mouth and eat that baby." Then Old Ship is gonna say "Gotchhhhhhhhhhha!" LMBO

Suggestions based on years of experimenting with colors, a knowledge of fish vision underwater and hundreds of fish caught:

Clear plastic works


Many believe that lure color must represent this or that prey animal, but over 25 years ago I fished clear plastic crankbaits and Zara Spooks and caught bass. The above injection molded curl-tail did well catching crappie and bass. The water was the usual algae green but fish had no problem targeting it same for the mini-stick on the right.

Note: On the tail is fine glitter. Other than color, a bit of flash or sparkle gets a fish's attention - FAST - and begins the excitation process leading to a strike. It doesn't take much to be instantly noticed. Fine craft glitter is sold everywhere and Mend-It glue for soft plastics is easy to brush on followed by pressing the lure on to a bit of glitter sprinkled on a paper plate. Super Glue may work.

Using your colors but leaving clear plastic areas and considering the use of a small bit of glitter, may enhance your lure's shape and action part. Beetle Spins and Mepps have been catching fish for a half century mostly due to bright flashing blades, but subtle flash and coloration does as well if not better at times than stark contrast. As I've proven to myself over the years - a little does go a long way.

There you have it: a range of appearances for fish to chew on.
