I believe it’s size of the bait.
Action can be controlled by the jig fishermen. I like a 1 3/4 inch bait not to big or to small. But if I had to pick a color a solid pearl bait looks more like baitfish

I believe that the stingers are probably a number one bait and I use a wide variety and sizes I prefer the smaller ones 11/2'' to 1'' . As far as color goes I don't give it much thought I'm more of an action person than I am a color person . I tried to duplicate what ever the fish are feeding on as far as color goes And I am not a bright color person .

I thought I had the answer to the 1st question until I started to write it down. I was leaning heavy toward color but there are too many variables. I cannot give a definite opinion on number 1 but I can on number 2...Stinger

#1 I would pick both depending on conditions.

    #2 for plastics Shad stinger.

Bob I love brightly color lures. I think they have their place. Chartreuse enough to melt your eyes is perfect.....lol

I also know natural colors have their place as well. Once again depending on conditions.

First question: Confidence in what you are using and what the fish are telling you.

Second question: A one and a half inch stinger tail.

    Great Questions

1st - Have to agree with the guys on conditions - weather, water clarity, etc

2nd - colors have their place on conditions from BRIGHT to drab

Well this works for me when all efforts become frustrating
(Seems to be hard for any fish to turn down a worm of any color)
So I start tossing a 3 to 4" natural colored trout worm
which in itself has it own action being hooked on in so many different ways

What catches more fish Color or action ?.
I have a second question if you were to pick one bait which one would you pick.
Lure action by design in combination with lure size are two key lure components I match to fish activity. Sometimes fish will hit a 5" plastic worm, at other times 1.5" plastics. Along with design and size considerations is presentation. Wrong presentation and no or fewer fish.

Color can serve to emphasize lure shape and action depending on water clarity, time of day and available light. Black is my least favorite color based on personal bias not proof. As with all the above, confidence in a lure design in certain colors must be considered.

    Example:
I have the least confidence in curl tail grubs, but added to a Beetle Spin have great confidence the combo catches fish - and has - all in the same area !

In in the above example flash is added to the combination of lure factors, color IMO is secondary to the combination of lure action, size and the flash of a small blade.

As far as a personal favorite - for me there can never be just one. The more the better on a daily basis - some far more versatile than others.
