    Default Helping a student out

I got a student in my class that loves to go fishing. Just about every day he wants to talk about fishing with me. He is a really good kid and his family doesn't have much. He has told me before, he doesn't care what he is catching as long as he is catching fish. He said he doesn't have very many lures because they are too expensive. This morning I put together a box of some baits and jigs that I have poured over the last few weeks. I tell people all the time, education isn't just about tests and textbooks. It's about helping kids succeed, in the classroom and in life.

Hey Buckeye, I'm a teacher as well. Algebra & Geometry down here in south Arkansas for the past 23 years. I, too, have had students who like to talk hunting and fishing and I've found that you can build relationships with kids by visiting with them about things they like. I've never taken a student hunting or fishing, but I have given lots of lures away and a lot of my kids get on this website to see what I post. They keep up. Glad I'm not the only one!

By the way, you're doing a great job and you should feel appreciated for what you do. Now how did I know that???

How's he set for rods, reels, etc? I'd be willing to either send stuff, or chip in for what he needs. Let me know.

Awfully nice of you to help the kid out, generosity is a gift that keeps on giving long after his schooling is done with!

Thanks GTT, This is my 8th year teaching Middle School Science. Prior to getting my license I spent 7 years doing quality control testing for chemical companies. Getting my teaching license was the best decision I have made besides marrying my wife. I enjoying sharing life lessons and experiences as much as I do teaching Science. Book knowledge is important, but life experiences will take you further. I am just happy to see a kid who likes being outdoors more than being on his cell phone or playing video games.

FurFlyin, Thats very generous. I will check with him. I know he got a new rod and reel for Christmas because he has been dying to use it but the weather will just not cooperate.

Hey BF and GTT, if you know of some others in your classrooms that we can help, I would not mind putting together some packages for them. But I'd prefer to mail it to you, and you split it up with the kids. My biggest expense is mailing, so if I can mail it to one person rather than multiple people, that'd be best. I'm not talking about boat loads, but I have sponsor stuff that needs homes. Also, if possible and allowed, maybe take pics with some of this sponsor stuff and the kids, that way we keep getting stuff! lol

    Slab,
I would have to check about taking pictures. We send home a form at the beginning of the year that is a release to take pictures or video of students for school purposes, such as the school website, school social media accounts, etc. When I record lessons, I have to send a separate form home to get permission. If the parents don't give permission the students have to be behind the video recorder. For this, I would probably have to get permission from the parents but I will check with the school and see what would need to be done.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and generous offers. I will check with some of the higher ups and see what course of action can be taken. I am pretty new here but I can see already this is a great site with awesome members!
