me too buddy. I was thinking standing on one foot on ice/snow for too long a period without changing feet. I have seen birds stand on one foot and keeping the other drawn up into their belly down feathers to keep warm and periodically change supporting leg. Maybe he went to sleep too long between shift changes and the foot developed frost bite. It wasn't affecting his fishing that day.....

Birds feet are adapted to cold weather extremes in several ways. First off they have very small blood vessels, arteries and veins in their legs which are situated next to each other. This arrangement allows for the warm blood flowing down the leg to be cooled by the blood coming back from the feet. The blood is cold going into the feet so hardly any heat is lost from the feet standing in the cold water or ice. The cold blood returning to the heart is then warmed as it flows up the leg back towards the heart. Damage to the leg (fishing line maybe) would interrupt this heat exchange and the cold would have certainly sealed the fate of the missing wheel. As always, an excellent picture, and I am curious if you noticed the missing foot before or after the picture was taken?

as a photographer, after. as a crappie fisherman, way sure! that was the reason i swam underwater, crawled 400 yards, and laid beside the dead carp waiting for the only one legged heron on the lake...
