    Default spider rigging

New to spider rigging, tried over the weekend, caught a few but hookup % was terrible. BnM bgjp 16 used 1/2 oz on main line, 2' to 3' fluorocarbon leader , 3/32 oz jig . The fish seemed to be 8' to10' in 25 fow, we had several hits but had a very low hookup rate.

Well you know what is said about opinions. lol
But 1/2 oz might not have been enough lead.
Which is the reason i personally prefer using a rig with the sinker on the bottom of the rig attached with either a loop knot at the end of the line, or a snap at the end of the line. That way the weight can easily be changed or removed altogether for storing the rig.
You could also try adding more weight with a split shot to the rig you are using.
Also, telescopic poles are very reasonable, try a few of those in shorter lengths like 10/12 feet before investing in more of the longer ones.

You have to be quick ...if rod tip barely moves or if the line slightly moves you need to yank that pole out of the rod holder quick to set the hook. That is the learning curve. Keep trying, you will catch on.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

I have been told to use more weight and speed up seems like more weight ,quickness, speed ,rod tip barely quivering, are all things that are getting harder to do lol

    More opinion here...

I very rarely use anything heavier than a 1/2 oz egg sinker when spiderrigging. That's what's on my rods 98% of the time. It sounds to me like it could have just been an issue with how the fish were reacting. Some days I've found that you need to stick them as soon as you see anything out of the norm (rod tip moves, line moves, etc.) Other days you have to let them load it up before sticking them. That's all part of the learning curve. If you find that you are missing fish let them have it a little bit longer to get the bait in their mouth. Sometimes finicky fish will grab your minnow by the tail and never have the hook. Give them a little time and they'll get the hook in their mouth. The other thing you can try is downsizing your bait in those situations.

One last thing I'll add is to make sure to give them a good solid hook set. I see some folks that just pick the rod up out of the holder. That'll work some days, but especially with a longer pole you have to exert a little force to sink that hook. Not a bass hook set mind you...but a solid jerk.

Good luck and keep after them! There's no replacement for time on the water and gaining experience.
Hooking up every chance I get!

Not a fan of 1/32 for spider rigging . Mostly it is the hook size in that small of jig .
