It's based on how deep the crappie are, sometimes you have to run at different deeps to see. A fish finder will show how deep the bait fish are, that helps but Crappie may be holding deeper, coming up to feed. Water temp. can be a factor, also the sun.

Yeah i have a fishfinder and was thinking same thing but someone told me other day spyder rigging you normally fish 3 to 5 ft deep and down here in fl in summer crappie are 15 to 20ft deep but in the winter there in 8to 10ft just depends on the lake .i usually drag jigs out the back of my boat but me and my fishing partner wanted to fish out the front and back

Over here I normally fish around 12 ft in anything deeper than that. We do a lot of our trolling in mid lake water. There are times they will be deeper or shallower but normally 12 is my target depth. Like trypman said find the shad and fish a foot or so under them. We catch them at times 3-4 ft down in 20 ft of water.

I’ve found that just because you don’t see fish on your ff it doesn’t mean fish aren’t shallow in deeper water. I’ve fished 10 feet of water getting lots of bites at 1 ft deep. I usually push double minnow rigs from just under the surface to bouncing double Kentucky rigs( weight at bottom of rig) on the bottom. Another thing I noticed, sometimes you are pushing 16 minnows and get bit on a certain pole. You put on a fresh minnow after taking fish off and that exact hook gets bit next. Sometimes it’s not the depth or the pole but it’s the freshly hooked minnow freaking out on your hook.

I start off with all of my poles at different depths and let the fish tell me what i need to know.
