Default 8lb vs 10lb line for pulling cranks

Hi, I haven’t been on here in a while. I sold my boat a few years ago and just recently purchased another one. I’ve been out of the game a minute and best I can remember I always used 10 lb test for pulling cranks but was wondering if anyone knows what difference it makes by using 8lb instead.

Do you use trolling depth curves? Like precision trolling? Most use 10lb xt diameter (same as 12lb big game), so you want to use that diameter line if you want to know exactly how deep your baits are running. If not, doesn't matter, use whatever you want. 8lb will make them dive deeper.

Yeah, I didn’t think it would make much difference was just wondering if anyone knew how much difference. Either way I’ve been using 8lb and have been seeing pretty much the same results as I saw when I used 10lb. with the same amount of line out.

Yeah, I would think that it would also depend on the line diameter, as not all brands are equal in their diameter at the same pound test of other brands. BUT, you'd probably have to let out many, many feet of line to get even small inches in extra depth .... so it's likely to be an unnoticeable difference.

On the reels I use for small mouth I have been using 6# for years with 1/4 oz jig heads. I'm tempted to try 4# sometimes.

I don't use cranks for crappies but do for walleyes and there is a difference between 8 &10 lb. especially when trolling deep water i.e.: 15-20 fow.

For shallow water it wouldn't make much of a difference.

One thing for sure get your self a lure knocker to get those cranks out of snags. Will save you a lot of money.

Quit using mono long time ago cranking, use 30lb Power Pro now. Dives deeper quicker and lose very few baits. Charts are for reference and that is something I had a hard time with when I started, look at the very little now.
Either will work, keep it simple and have fun, good luck
