Anyone know how many bass I need to remove?
We have about an acre and a half pond full of fish about 10 foot deep at the deepest. Never catgut a small crappie, not sure they even spawn in my pond. I put all of them in and I think only males but hard to really know. Some decent cats also, even an albino. I only know because when I feed them. Never see small cats either?
My question is bass. Tons of 8 to 10 inch fish but some nice ones in our pond also. I'm not comfortable throwing the small bass on the bank so I've been catching them and putting them in a public fishing lake in our town. I've removed maybe 2 dozen this year already.
The one pic showing fish in the water was during the gill spawn, they will just sit there and wait to fee, it's pretty cool to watch.....and catch!
You can catch a 3 to 4 pounder every now and then but hardly ever a 1 or 2 pounder. They're either 10 inches or 3 pounds. I'm not spending the money to shock it so just guessing now. Thoughts?

I don' t have an answer for you but you might try watching some of this. He seems to have a mighty successful fish and animal population on the 5 acre pond he built. I am sure there are some tidbits in there you might use.

I was told by the fish stocking facility that , you should remove some of whatever is in larger numbers than the rest .
For instance , lots of 12 inch bass , some need to go until it is a more equal number to the other sizes , if that makes sense .
catfish will rarely have a successful spawn in smaller water bodies and it is best to harvest them at eating sizes and restock as needed .
in a pond full of larger established predator fish the crappie will likely never over populate it . In synopsis it would help to better understand the direction you want to head with your pond .
if you are happy with it and it is stable and a fun spot to play with them , maybe leave well enough alone ....
if you have another agenda , then you may need to target specific things in your pond ...

I would recommend the pond boss forum. I would also caution against moving fish around like that. Largemouth bass virus wiped out the fish in the lake here at work and it is struggling to recover. It used to be an awesome smallmouth fishery with some large largemouth mixed in. Now it is rare to catch either.

interesting , saw a recent article somewhere about recording them there large mouths with the black spots on them , we see them in some waters locally from time to time , it was stated that is caused by some kind of virus in that article as wellOriginally Posted by zummy
