I would use 3/4". It won't flex like 1/2".

It doesn't matter what diameter you use

PEX is cheaper

One tip I use, cut off the bucket handle or you will get hung up on it. I either make or buy an eye hook and put in the center of the bucket and then use my anchor rope to ease them down in the water.

The FREE size is the best size! Call around to a few local contractors and plumbers and volunteer to clean up their scrap piles. You'll be surprised how much of all types/sizes you can get with little out of pocket cost. Heck, the local mail carrier saw me building some last year and brought me some from a jobsite on his route.....
