    Default Structure strategies

In this layout plan I try to come up with a layout that will favor the predator fish. Here is an example of what I mean. I put a lot of small basket structures out to provide cover for minnows and little fish in a private lake I fish. I set the baskets in 3-4 ft of water. The basket structures attract minnows and the minnows attract crappie and bass. Step 2 in this plan is to place a second piece of structure for the predator fish to use. I like to take a 30 gallon plastic trash can. To prep t-can cut out bottom of can to create a tube. Then drill 4 holes in a vertical line about 3 inchs apart down side of t-can. Then wire your t-can to a concrete block running wire through holes you drilled in t-can. Then take the t-can tube and set it about 4ft away from basket and face top opening toward basket. Predator fish will hide inside of t-can and wait for little fish to get to far from basket and to close to t-can! And then its SNACK TIME! And fishing this site is easy. Simply cast past t-can and real your lure back and kill it just as it passes in front of t-can. If there is a fish in there they will always hit your lure. They can't help it it a reaction strike. When your lure all of a sudden appears right in front of their face BOOM! Ok let me jump back and tell you what the basket structure is... your gonna laugh at how redneck this is. It's a rectangular plastic laundry basket. Flip it up side down and wire a piece of rebar to sides for weight. I know it sounds crazy but its the absolute best for attracting minnows. They provide great cover and shade for little fish. Don't believe me stop reading this and go get your wifes freshly folded laundry and dump it out. Make sure its all wrinkled and messed up. Put your laundry basket upside down and just look at it. Now you see it your imaging all those little fish swimming in and out of all those holes. And the best part is this whole set up will cost you about 15 bucks for everything you need to make this setup. I made six of these setups and put them in different areas of a lake I fish. These work great for me. Caught a lot of fish off this setup. I will say I have caught more bass than crappie off this. GOOD FISHING!

Just my opinion but it's easier just to put out stakebeds and that covers it all. Minnows and everything can use the pallets with verticle stakes. Built open enough even the big fish use them.

I like stake beds too. But the setup I described has a different function than a stake bed. The setup I described is intended to create a ideal ambush point for a predator fish. That's what BIG FISH look for. They want a spot that hides them out of sight from prey. Big fish are like turkey hunters they wait for prey to move right in front of them and then they pull the trigger. This isn't meant to hold a lot of fish like a stake bed its meant to hold 1 really good one. A friend of mine found this stump on a lake he fishes. The stump has a big hole borrowed under it. And its the first spot he fishes everytime. And he almost always catches a big one out of that hole. And that's because its an ideal ambush point and the fish know it. That's what this system recreate a Hole for a big fish to hide in and wait for dinner to swim by. And it does work. I landed my biggest bass ever 7 lb. He was laying in a trash can tube waiting for dinner to swim by. And I have caught some really nice crappie too. My largest black crappie came from this setup. And this is very easy to setup. A lot less work than a stake bed. Like I said I ain't knocking stakes or anyones preferences. Just telling what works for me. GOOD FISHING!

Put the stake beds in and sink a couple bails of straw near them the straw will grow algae and the minnows will eat algae and the crappie will come for minnows.

reservoirdog, 2 quick questions: don`t your wife wonder what happened to the laundry baskets? And no disrespect, but are you related to Larry the cable guy? I actually think it would WORK...might be tempted to zip tie 4 10 hole bricks to it, 1 on each corner to attract small crayfish too

The idea is great, and any structure will give bigger fish a a ambush point. I don't really think they need a enclosed area to hide in. I do like the idea, and agree with thelogic of the idea. But we try to make structure out of stuff that that does not cost any money. The only thing we buy is cement, and wish I could figure out a way to to get it free. The less money you haft to put into structure, the more structure you can make.

Again, I think the idea is great, sink'm and get to catching crappie.

I could not agree more CK less money the better.......I spend enough on things we actually use and can rationalize but throwing it overboard to never see again lol that a funny thing alot of people just dont understand.
I go to Lowes and buy there "broken" bag usually for a dollar. It might be cement or mortar but it will still serve it purpose when it get mixed with some big rock and hardens. When I prepare buckets I'll put half rock(usually what i dig out of my garden each year) and half bag of crete on top so I have 50 cent a bucket..
