Electric ? bigger is better for a first timer . Hand fillet knife ? no difference . jmo.
i plan t take a fishing trip ina few weeks i plan to catch blue gill crappie and catfish i have never fileted a fish before and im sure im gonna butcher the hell out of it. but curious out of the 3 what is the easiest to filet ill cook the blue gill and crappie with the skin on just scale them with a spoon first

Id say you pretty much have it perfected.
I do it about the same, except I remove the ribs with a different knife after the skins off.
But your way is definatly faster, so im gonna try it. (All bones gone) is always my main concern.
I find just a $15 Wall Mart electric knife is better than my Mr fisherman brand.
Catfish now are a different situation, smaller ones are best thrown back imop.
For larger ones I start in the middle on each side and fillet in both directions, then fillet the belly meat.

Wow, a good show, my way to fillet also, just not as clean!
That's not me, just the way I do it. I use a different knife for the ribs too.
