I put off crappie fishing for a week and with my wife drove up to Stafford, VA (just north of Fredericksburg) to participate in my first ever green carp, er ah, I mean bass, tournament. I was one of 67 fishermen that volunteered their boat. I was paired up with Marine Sgt. Brandon. (never got his last time) On his very first cast he landed this decent sized yellow perch.

Unfortunately for us and every other boat we talked to fishing was downright slow. We only managed 6 other fish after this one and only two of those were bass. We came across a dock over 10' of water and I couldn't help but fling a Money jig under it and landed a 10" crappie. Since we were bass fishing I didn't hang around. Later on I was casting a Bandit crank bait along a weed line and caught a 9" crappie. I think the fishing gods were trying to tell me something. We only weighed in the two bass that Brandon caught for 3.18lbs. I have not seen results so I do not know what weight won.

We put in on the Aquia Creek which we never left. (It feeds into the Potomac River.) The vast majority of the water we fished was only around 5' deep with very thick weeds up to within 2' of the surface. We headed up a smaller creek that dumped into it and found water up to 17' deep but not much action.

Here are some pics that were posted on their facebook page.

I know that most of us have our favorite charities but as fishermen, I cannot think of a better charity to donate your time or money to.
