Old dogs CAN learn new tricks

Went to my northern cabin to crappie fish and maintenance. Stopped by my crappie guru buddy's house for report and he warned me big cold front and lot of rain turned them off of usual haunts. Boy was he right as always.

Went to warm water arm and 4 guys were there w minnows and they had nothing. I fished for hour caught 1.

Went to cabin dropped off my stuff, start a fire and open it up. Then hit the shore where I usually fish and NADA. Went back after hour and took a nap. Then went back before dark under bridge and nothing.

Next morning didn't bother getting out early, sat and had breakfast and got on computer. Finally went to lake at 8 30 and sure enough another good buddy crappie dude was there. Usually does real well as he knows where the brush is planted but had empty bucket , not even a bump!

We chatted for while and noticed a buddy of his was on other side of bridge ketchn quite a few. I suggested to him he go over and find out what he was doing rather than just leave and he did.

Then I got the call that saved my trip. Crappie guru buddy called said forget big lakes and go w him to ponds where he had stocked crappie years ago.

Course I beat it down to his place and we went. Pulled up on a one acre pond didn't seem deep but he tossed out bobber jig 18 inches down and caught couple keepers. I tossed road runner and it was on. Moved to dam deeper water and in 2 spots caught a dozen solid 10.5 to 11 inch black crappie, w few slimmer whites mixed in. Switched to bobber after while when I moved to shallower part and really did well. My buddy had dozen nice ones as well. As he said after 6 years needed to take some out and we did.

Went to another deeper pond he stocked and said we would keep all bass we caught but some big crappie there too. Well-lit was a bass ketchn frenzy as one nice one after another. 12 to 16 inches we filled 2 buckets full. Then my back was Barkin so I laid on bank while having bobber in water. SO of course KABOOM. big bass grabbed my jig and I fought it for minutes on my back and saw it flash before getting off. About 5 lbs but would gave released anyway so fun! Then buddy caught only crappie there 14 inches.

We put the bass and crappie in buddys lake and I put crappie on ice as it was time to go home. Papa daycare was needed next morning.

Lesson learned is after big cold front big lakes are affected a lot but ponds and small lakes not so much as they bit aggressively.

Then other buddy called and said his friend was fishing 4 foot deep while he ALWAYS fishes 8 to 10 and farther out. he went vack to his spot made 5he adjustments and ended up w limit.

Couple old dogs learned some new things.
