• Throw back Wednesday

I got to the ramp just as the sun was starting to come up. But this time I had to wait my turn to launch. First time this season for that !

Les ( Lobsterman ) showed up as I was parking the truck. We loaded his gear and headed out into the lake. It was as calm as glass out there.

My game plan was to pick up where I left off last time out. I headed over to the happy hunting grounds. We made our pass through the area and nothing !! I make another pass and still nada. Time to change plans. I point the boat into a new course and we move out of the area.

Les is sitting in the back of the boat with 6 rods out, all pointing back. Just as we were getting settled in with something to drink, his back starboard rod makes a hard swing to port, behind the motor. He drops his bottle of water and grabs the rod while yelling fish on. I grab the net just to be ready. He lifts the rod tip and and even I can hear the rod start to sing. The forward motion of the boat stops. I put the net down and start to bring in some of the other rods. By this time I have no control of the boat, the fish is taking us for a ride. I watch as Les plays deep sea fisherman, lifting the rod then cranking. He makes progress, getting the fish close enough to see the swivel and leader, only to have the fish turn and take off again. I put the net down and pick up my coffee, this is going to take awhile. Something breaks water about 30 ft from the boat and is looked to be 4 or 5 feet long. It was a big gar ! I finished my coffee as Les finally bring the fish along side of the boat.

We released him at the side and he was gone before we knew it.

That turned out to be the ice breaker for us. We then started to catch some fish. But they were small throw back size. We worked our way across the lake with out much to show for out trip . We turn and head back.

We had been working deeper water all morning, it was time to move closer to shore to see how that worked. It proved to be the ticket for us. We picked up two keeper crappie and then we started to catch a few stripers. We would catch a striper then untangle our lines. set them back out and go through it again. It was fun !

In the end, 4 fish made the ride home. It was a good fun day on the water with a good friend. What more can I ask for ?

    Until next time,

    tight lines and full nets

    see you on the water
