• Got a few last night

We've had a run of lousy weather here in CT over the last week or so. Lots of rain, strong storms, drizzle all day, etc. With more storms predicted for tomorrow, I loaded up the boat after my last delivery showed up at work and headed for the pond. I arrived to find a fog bank just at treetop level and it would soon drop down and I'd spend the next 2 1/2 hours in and out of the fog and mist. With all the rain, the water clarity was very poor for this water, maybe 3' when it usually runs closer to 8' or so. Air temperature was 70 with water temp at 67. I expected to find them in a bit deeper water than usual due to weather conditions so I geared up with 1/16 oz. jig heads and started searching in the 18-20' water. I launched at 5:10 and it took nearly 20 minutes to boat the first fish, a nice bluegill. Another bluegill followed about a half hour later, very slow start to the trip.

Both were above average for this water. A nice yellow perch of about 10" soon followed. I'd get another perch a bit later about the same size but he dropped off the hook and flopped all over the boat and I tossed him overboard once I could finally get a hold of him.

I changed tactics about 6:45 and went back to my 1/32 ounce heads and brighter colors of plastics and began to search the shallower water, trying to find some crappie. Didn't take long for this to pay off. Got closer to the weed edge on the opposite side of the pond from where I usually fish and the crappie began to hit.

I trolled back and forth along that long weed edge in about 14-16' of water, hooking some decent fish at regular intervals. I had tried a variety of colors throughout the evening trying to find something that worked. I'll have to look up the color names but whatever you call them, they put fish in the boat. I left them biting at 7:45 and headed home.
Total for the night would be 3 bluegill, 2 perch and perhaps a dozen crappie from 9-11". Lost 2 very nice crappie approaching the boat; they came up to the surface and simply shook off the hook before I could get them close enough to net. Wish I'd been able to get them in as they would have been easy 12" fish.
