This is the first time we've fished together in the same boat, though we've known one another for many years. It was a refreshing change to be in a powered boat and not have to worry about rowing for a change. He had recently installed a new, top of the line Garmin sonar unit and we were both eager to put it to the test, which it passed with flying colors.
We learned that we each have different fishing habits but we found common ground and learned a bit about different tactics than what we were each used to.
Took a while to get the first one in the boat but once the ice was broken, they began to come a bit more regularly. A combination of crappie and bluegill to start, coming mostly from casting to edges and pockets in the heavy weeds with a variety of plastics. When that slowed, we moved over in to some deeper water and found a couple of crappie, which found their way in to the cooler as well. Some looking around and some fussing with the new electronics, then we moved over tight to the shore looking for bedding bluegill; what we found was bedding rock bass! We must have landed 7-8 of them over the next 1/2 hour, and a couple of the bigger ones took an ice bath to round out the keepers of the day. A bit farther up the line, he hooked and landed the big fish of the day, a large mouth bass which seemed to be a carbon copy of the one I landed a couple of nights ago; might have been the same one as it was in the same area I got mine.
The bite dropped off as the southerly breeze picked up under cloudless blue skies and we called it a day about 11 or so.
I'm guessing we ended up with about 10 keepers of a mix of crappie, 'gills and rock bass. Nearly that many were tossed back for another day. About 1/2 way home I realized I forgot to take the cooler out of his boat so he ended up cleaning our catch and last I heard, fish tacos were on the menu at his house for dinner.
