Jeff and I took a trip down to Delton on Sunday to try our luck on Crooked Lake. If's been so long since I've been fishing I wasn't sure if I remembered how. We got on the water about 6:30 and were the first to launch, with a line of boats behind us.
Our first stop was productive but not for the size we were looking for. A lot of 7 1/2" bluegills and sunfish were thrown back in hopes of finding the honey hole of bigger fish. For the next couple of hours we worked the shoreline managing to put a few in the box but not finding exactly what we were looking for. We met another boat doing the same thing but in the opposite direction and they said they were having the same type of luck, smaller fish and very few good ones.
Then our luck changed. We happened on a group of beds that had big sunfish on then. We got bit as soon as the bait (redworms) hit the water. It was fast and furious for a while and when it slowed down we needed just 13 more for our two man limit of 50.
Over the next hour or so we managed to finish out our limit then decided to have some fun, me with a fly rod and Jeff with a casting bubble. When it was nearing time to leave we long lined small jigs and sliders on the way back to the launch, catching maybe a dozen crappie up to 11". These were all released.
The only picture we got is yours truly with a nice black crappie.
