• Almost went home

But I’m so glad I didn’t. Got an early start after a rough week at work. I was ready for some water time. Saw Mike and Sylvia at a very busy ramp, collegiate tourney, maybe high school. 17 boats. The sun wouldn’t be up for at least a half an hour.

A wind near 10mph had the lake a bit rougher than last week. This was the first chop that I have been out in with the new ride, still un-named. It’s very different and I’ll have to learn what is too rough to play in. I could get away with some pretty windy conditions before, usually the last one to head in. Ran downwind to the north end and got rods out. Started west and rode, and rode, and rode some more. I bet it was close to an hour before a rod bent and the first fish came to the boat, big enough to throw back. And I rode some more. This was probably the slowest start I can remember. Almost another hour passed before a rod went off with a serious fish on the other end. Best of the day at 13 1/2” and thick shouldered. Now we’re talkin!!

and slow and steady I added to her as a few more hours went by. A few throwbacks also came to visit but not many, about as many as I kept. The wind laid down some and made things a little easier but it was always a presence. Around 11 I noticed that the bite was slowing down and by 11:30 it was done for me. Wrapped up and headed in before the school kids came back around. I was genuinely surprised at the size of the fish overall. A slow day usually means small to mediocre fish at best, but these were chunky and oversized for a first day after a front. 14 more fillets for next month and a much better attitude by trips end. Hope to see everyone next month, I always get excited knowing a gathering is around the corner. Might get out again before it gets here, its all up to the guy who’s redoing the wood floors in the bathroom. Can’t really get anything else done until he’s been gone 3 days and the urethane dries. Maybe I’ll see you out there sometime soon, til then......Skeet.

Great job! And you know something, it seems, even up here in the northeast, that much past 11 am the bite slows dramatically. Could never figure that out?
