Last Saturday (9/14) we had a tournament out of Varrett. The day started off a little rough with my partner calling me an hour after I was suppose to leave the house wondering where I was. Yup, set the alarm for 4:00...... PM! The other boats left out about 15 minutes before I got to the launch. We couldn't find anything in the treetops so we moved on to the docks where we caught 18 keepers and a few throw backs. Nothing too big but they all taste the same.
It bothered me that we couldn't find any fish in the tops so I took off work Thursday to go figure out what went wrong. I was able to find one fish in the trees before I got frustrated and headed to the always trusty docks. Ended up shooting docks until noon. Found some decent fish in the Belle River area. Kept 15 that day. Had about that many throw backs.
Woke up yesterday morning earlier than usual and decided to try the Amite River since it's only half a mile from the house. The rain the other day had the water to the north muddied up so I headed south and found a few standing trees in 30 feet of water. I got hit on my first three drops at about 12 feet but missed them. Thinking they we just small fish I didn't expect much. I dropped on the other side of the tree and THUMP! I ended up with a 15 inch SLAB. Knowing there's fish like that so close to home it'll be hard to stay off the water. I fished for another hour or so and ended up bringing the big girl and four smaller ones home.
