Hit the Red at 8:30 this morning. Teacher slept in. Tried same thing as 2 weeks ago, except with shiners. Started slow. Last time 3.5 to 4 feet deep was the key. Today started at 5 feet and got deeper as the day got hotter. Surface water temp was 94 at 3pm!! By then they were 6-7 feet deep in 8-10 feet of water. Caught 22 on shiners. then 12 on pink/chartreuse with a swim tail. Water is starting to clear up. Bout 8" of visibility.

Fished shiners on a drop shot rig, Started with two hooks and then one hook when one hook broke. Two hooks wastes a lot of shiners when fish shake them both off. I would lower it by a stump, swim it a bit, then hold it still. Don't think I ever caught two fish from the same stump. Caught a couple on jig before the shiners ran out. Changed colors until I settled on pink chartreuse with swim tail 2.5" I think the vibration attracts fish in the muddy water.

I made a depth gauge from a piece of orange fly line with the core pulled out. About 2.5 " long. Put rubber bobber stopper above and below it, so I could easily adjust it up or down, but it would hold it's place, and was very easy to see. It would go through the guides easily also.

Another thing I have learned is to put ice in with my shiners in the summer. That seems to be the most important thing in keeping them alive. Start out when you first get them with a little bit of ice so it's not too big of a change. Then add a bit every hour or two. I haven't tried it yet, but I bet a frozen bottle of water would work very well.

Fun trip in spite of the heat. Too lazy to clean fish, so all were released to bite again.
