• A new pond!

A new pond! Walt & I checked out a pond we hadn't fished for years. Not a big pond mind you, about 70 acres. Lots of summer homes along the shoreline and not a great launch. But we've heard it has some decent crappie in it. We only had the morning to fish, so we launched around 8 am. Air was in the upper 60's and the water was 76 degrees. Calm to very light winds. This is what our day started out looking like:

Pretty place. And we even had a brief flyover from an eagle. All good!

We started off casting the first drop off at 14'. Nailed a few on CB sliders and fewer on straight tails. But at least they were the right species! After about an hour, we switched over to side pulling 4 rods (2 each) from 14' to the max depth of 17'. Loaded with bait everywhere on the surface. Couldn't identify the species, but some bass were crashing into them and whenever we got close, we picked up a crappie or two.

A couple of screen shots of bait that we found at various depths on the sonar. Although most were visually apparent on the surface of the pond.

Sun angle plays a big role is clarity, but I think you'll get the picture.

When we pulled off around 11:30 this morning, we had only caught & released 30 fish. Four were bluegill with one yellow perch. The rest were crappie. Although not giant crappie, they were quality fish. I do believe this pond has a lot of potential with all the bait around and limited area in which to feed. We'll see. Definitely worthy of a second look. Here are some of the fish we got. I accidentally deleted a couple of my pictures, but the photos were very representative of the size fish were were catching:

All in all a very pleasant way to spend the morning. According to the weather forecasts, this was the "coolest" day available to us. Sunday through next Thursday suppose to be a lot hotter with thunderstorms. So we'll lay low until the weather improves.
