• Making Crappie Fishing History fishing with Whitey Outlaw and Ronnie Capps

I had the extreme pleasure to accompany two of the worlds best crappie fishermen, and document their adventure. The two fishermen I'm talking about are Whitey Outlaw, and Ronnie Capps.

As we slipped away from the boat launch the fishing talk began, and continued pretty much for the next 6 hours non-stop. The fishing was tough, but if anyone was going to find fish on these waters, it was gonna be Whitey Outlaw and Ronnie Capps.

It was like watching a symphony, Whitey's jig would snag, he would hold his rod with one and, and while shifting rods from one Driftmaster rod holder to the other, Ronnie pulled line out from under Whitey's rods lowest eye so that Whitey could then plunge the rod tip down into the water in front of him, and push the jig off the underwater limb it was stuck to. It was unreal. You would think that the two of them had been fishing together their whole lives, but in actuality, this was their very first time on the water together.

They were brutal on their equipment. They knew just how far they could push their BnM BGJP's without breaking them. Sometimes they would push their jigs off the snags with their rod tips, other times they would snap the rods up into the air with reckless abandon. I have to say, after seeing the abuse those BGJP's took, they have to be some of the toughest rods on the market.

And snag they did, they snagged a lot. They had to fish deep in the brush to catch the crappie. If they were not catching fish, they were catching brush. The fishing this day was tough and this seemed to be the only way you could catch them, particularly with how hot the air and water temps were.

It was also a shock to me that Ronnie was running Whitey's boat. And he ran it like it was his own. His foot was always on the pedal, and most of the time his hand was on the speed control. He looked like a pretzel, but this is the way he did it, and his boat control was amazing.

    Here's Ronnie catching kitty...

And here, watch this one. Quick Draw McGraw. Notice he just floats the crappie at the surface of the water till he's ready to yank him in.
