• Fun Fall Morning

I am not a Fall fisherman. When I fished for those green carp regularly, it was the same story, not a Fall fisherman. I love being on the water this time of year as the scenery is impeccable but figuring out where and what the fish are doing is a whole different ballgame. I ventured over to Douglas this morning with a couple goals in mind. First, try my new JDM rod on some gills or Crappie, whom ever wanted to cooperate and to run some gas through the boat as I had not been out in almost two months. The weather man said light winds, HAH my hiney, and cool temps, he was 1 for 2. It is hard to single pole with an ultralight set up in whitecaps but I found some calm 60 degree water up the lake and located some early takers, just the wrong kind. I started with my trusty St. Croix and the 4lb Nanofil casting structure and points and quickly realized who was home there, DrumKing’s pet fish!!

Man they were thumping the jig with authority but not what I was looking for. A couple small bass smacked the jig also but still not my intended quarry. As I went further up the lake I noticed several boats out in the deeper water trolling and netting fish. Did this old boy bring the long lining or trolling rods, nope, just two jig poles. Oh well, at least the wind was not as bad on this stretch of water and I broke out the new JDM Shimano Soare BB 7.6ft Mebaru rod and gave her a whirl. Spooled with 2lb SOS Trout Magnet line and a 1/32 jig head I started working some structure in about 13-17ft water and Tic, my first Crappie on the new rod.

A nice keeper, he put up a good fight and I netted him promptly. I caught a couple more speckled bellies and some small gills in this area. The Bison colored Trout Magnet was their favorite today, but the wind was too much to do what I was attempting. My biggest fish was about 12in, a definite tug of war on the new rod.

I really like the feel of this new weapon and can not wait to try it out in the Spring on the big Bluegill. I will be switching the line to 3lb Nanofil as the SOS monofilament has a lot of stretch. I gave my fish away at the public dock to a very nice man who had a couple in his fish basket and was leaving. We both went home happy!
