• Dog Days Crappie

What a week. 9 days ago the “G” sauce was tried and tested, passed with ease, and put a nice mess of Slabs in the bucket! We traveled to VA over the weekend to visit the Grand-babies and I did not even get to wet a line or sore any lips.

View from the deck, full moon, rods were loaded and ready but between a birthday party, yard work, and a plethora of Princess Dolls this was as close as Pepaw got to the water.

Oh well, it’s worth it as they are only young once. Those VA fish received a rare pardon, but the home boys were waiting and no mercy would be shown when this TN boy returned.

Monday this week - my yard chores. Tuesday -Rain. Wednesday-Rain. Thursday-Rain! Argh!! August temps in the 70’s and rain, What Dog Days???

Friday morning was Lake or Bust! The fish are already wet and I will certainly not melt. Water color was slightly stained, lake levels rising slowly, and the surface temperatures had cooled off 10 degrees. Ok, so the Crappie manual reads to start shallow and work deep. Cloud cover and a slight sprinkle made for a cool morning, but the crazy fish had not read the same manual I did. Those suckers were camped out on the bottom in each spot I visited. Modus operandi was simple, dip jig in Sauce, drop jig on bottom, reel up jig once, and hang on! Blacks and Whites were mixed, and multiple jigs were used and produced. I like the wiggle of the Thermocline Lures 2in Tadpole, so do they! Bobby Garland Baits did not disappoint either!

They were inhaling the Sauce once again, the Original Formula shined this particular morning.

    Even the Gills were active.

The 7ft St Croix rod handled the intended quarry quite nicely, paired with the Pflueger President Limited Edition reel and 4lb Nanofil.

Soon my favorite fish crossed the gunwale and

Number 15 hit the livewell so I hit the road. Bucket and Board pics may be boring but it is hard to embellish size and girth when you put them beside my Grandfathers old white measuring stick. Nothing under 10 (of course) and nothing over 12in.

Here is Big fish of the day:

One tried to get away but my feline helper kept him in check.

A good trip ending a long week. These are headed to the freezer!

I hate weeks like that. Sounds like it all worked in the end. My car always met me in the driveway, meowing loud, when I pulled in with the boat on the back. She knew what was coming. Good post, Thanks.
