Weather man said rain today so we figured on working. Got up to warm dry weather with no rain in sight so we went fishing instead. We went back to Caney Lake to look for some more red ears and bluegills.

We started where we left them biting yesterday but we couldn't find any that wanted to cooperate. We moved to the back of a bay we name Beaver Bay and found a few in shallow water tight to the weeds. 5 went in the box before we moved to the next bay.

I caught the first crappie of the day, a nice 12 1/2" male black crappie, on a jig and baby shad. I caught it off a downed tree and had another hit so we anchored up and fished shiners under bobbers around the top. After catching a small bass, I flipped my shiner back near the top and had another hit. When I set the hook I knew it was a bigger fish and told Jeff I had another bass. It wrapped itself around a limb, then unwrapped and when I got it near the boat it turned to make a run and I saw, for the first time, that it was a huge crappie. Jeff grabbed the net and sealed the deal, scooping it into the boat for me. It measured 15" and weighed in at just 2 pounds. Or did it? I weighed it when we got back and the digital scale bounced between 1lb 15oz and 2lb. I weighed it 3 times and the last time it settled on 2lb long enough for a picture.

We caught one more 12" black male before we called it a day.

When we got home we put Jeffs big white female crappie from Poverty Point on the scale and it weighed in at 2lb3oz. We also cleaned two of the white bass and cooked them for dinner to go with grilled porterhouse steaks. The white bass were excellent eating and we will be

keep a few next time we're at Poverty Point
