  • All Crappie Fishermen - Equipment Alert - By Bernard Williams

Iíve been having trouble with my Terrova getting weak after a few hours of trolling, my thinking was the
motor was about 6 or 7 years old and maybe the brushes were getting old and worn out. I called my
repair man and asked a few questions, he said that when he replaced the shaft and bottom casing he
replaced the old brushes and the armature was in great shape.

When I finish fishing I would check my batteries and they would show around 80% or better, so batteries
were not the issue. I then check the cables from the batteries to the front for continuity, no voltage
    drop. What a puzzle.

To make a long story short, my partner, Jake Taylor advised that one of his buddies had issues with line
wrapped around the prop. Surely that couldnít be the problem. Well what the heck, I removed the prop
and low and behold, there was enough line around the shaft to fill a reel.

So, hereís a friendly warning to all fishermen, pull your prop off and check for line every so often. Some
lazy fishermen discard their line in the lake when they get rid of it.

I also replaced the seal around the shaft just in case it was worn. Thank God it wasnít braided, that
wouldíve been big-time problems. It took about 2 minutes to remove the nut and pull the prop, time
well spent. Itís working like a new trolling motor now. Bernard

A good tip for sure. I got md when I see discarded fishing line in the water or along the bank waiting to do damage to fish and wildlife. Take it home with you you brought it, lot of launches have a disposable place for fishing line use it!

Great tip. I just traded for a used boat about 3 weeks ago and have not had time to carry it out. I am going to check this before I head out this morning.

Good tip. I put any line I take off my reels in an empty water bottle and put the cap back on and it will go in the recycle bin. Good place for it.

You ALMOST had an excuse to buy one of those New models, with the upgraded Spot Lock.

That same line will cost a fortune on your outboard if it eats the seal up. Usually by the time you discover it, it's because your lower unit already has issues.

Nothin spells "I don't care about the land or water" like a pile of old line...
Then the first people to gripe, when a spot gets shut down for litter.
We all break off now and again, and that's just part of it, but big piles are avoidable. Just a little effort on our part.

Because crappie folks tend to drop down close to the trolling motor this is a fairly frequent problem . I find this same thing in my trolling motor every year , wind and other factors cause the boat to swing one way or the other and there you have it , line in the trolling motor ....great read ...real facts

Great advice. I got trotline cord wrapped around my shaft and it broke the cotter pin in drive to the trolling motor, ended my day. A 2pk replacement prop nut and drive pin was 12 bucks...will always be carrying a spare with me.
