• How they fished to win the Crappie Masters Championship.

Practice was a difficult time for the Gant Brothers. A half day Wednesday in Swift Creek produced a few decent crappie. A full day of practice in the river on Thursday didn’t work at all.

Day One: “We went back to Swift Creek,” says Bill. “We set up in about 10 to 13 feet of water and tried running the contours in the creek.” They weighed 10.81 pounds for sixth place.

Day Two: “ Things changed,” says Roger. “ We tried fishing in the same place but the water was falling fast and it caused the fish to move out to deeper water. We went to 17 to 21 feet. We used two 1/4 - ounce jigs to get our baits down and keep them there. We were fishing much faster today because of the wind.”

The Gants method is side pulling. They set the boat sideways to the wind and use the wind and trolling motor to control their path. This gives them a wide path of coverage and good line separation. They also pull against the wind but prefer going with it.

“Fish were not aggressive when going slow,” says Roger. “Our line on day one was at a 45 degree Today the wind had us moving very fast. There was cover all over and we would catch an occasional fish. We had to fish real tight to cover. The wind didn’t bother us. We only got bite for about 45 minutes today.”

The team caught 10.61 for a total of 21.42 to win two Nitro Z7 boat with 150 Mercury motors.
