• How cool is this?

    I was away from my kids a lot of the time they were growing up. Shift work, over time, working holidays, bass tournaments, more over time--you get the picture. I didn't do a lot of the things typical Dads did with their kids while they grew up. My wife took care of most of the raising.

    I have always been a huge fan of the late 60s-late 70s rock music. it is still mainly what I listen to. Any time our family did any time in the car together, I was the radio-nazi. We listened to what DAD wanted to hear. My wife said I was warping my kids' minds with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen,Who, Yes, take your pick. Funny thing is, my kids became huge fans of that genre of music. Still are. My son has always said he held one thing against me that could never be changed---I saw Queen in Atlanta in their prime (1978). He would never get to since Freddy Mercury, singer, died of AIDS years ago. I never agreed with some life-style choices of some members of the band but I did love their music, still do.

    Fast forward to tonight. 2 original members of Queen are on tour--Brian May, guitarist and Roger Taylor, drummer. They are playing in Nashville tonight with some well known (not to me) artists joining the band. I got this text a few minutes ago.

    From Nathan (age 36);
    "Show is starting soon. If I have never properly said so, thank you for introducing me to this music. Between this and Roger Waters (Pink Floyd bassist) on 8/13,it will be a fun month."

    My reply;
    "And Mom thought you and Heather (our daughter)were being tortured in the back seat having to listen to it."

    Nathan's reply;
    "I'm not usually this excited for a show but this is gonna be pretty cool for sure."

    Nathan has seen Pearl Jam dozens of times. His concert attendance is several hundreds of shows. He never misses a chance to see an iconic act from the late 60s-early 70s like Bob Seger, Steve Miller, or the Who.

    My wife was sitting near me when this exchange took place. She rolled her eyes at the mention of the music she and the kids had to listen to. She also resents the fact that our daughter is making our grandkids into fans of the same music. Funny thing is the grandkids make Mimi (my wife) play that same music when they are in the car with her.

    Made me feel pretty good.

      Enjoyed your report and pics. Always good to keep the best generation of music (ever) going and to be able to pass it on to the younger generation is priceless

      That's very cool. I was a teen in the 80's and went to just about every Heavy Metal concert that came close from 1985 until 1989. I once saw Def Leppard on a Friday night in Shreveport and then the very next night in Little Rock. Same concert complete with Joe Elliot's comments verbatim. Went to Memphis to see the Monsters of Rock in July.........HOT!!!!

      Like you, I now have grown children and my 17 year old son, especially, asks for some "good songs" that I used to like. Apparently my list of songs was a hit at the last teen get-together. My wife doesn't like that kind of music anymore, but there are lots of things that kids hear today that's much worse than the "explicit" lyrics from bands like Dokken, Krokus, Y & T, Tesla, Van Halen, Def Leppard, and Ratt.

      Carry on. GTT

      My wife and I love the music of that era and go on the Moody Blues Cruises and 70 Rock and Romance with so many great bands from that era and earlier including roger daltrey, zombies, ambrosia, starship, little river band, ELO, ides of march, rare earth, america, peter frampton, asia, great cover bands, player and so many others that really rock you! Heck she has a shrine to justin heyward, peter noone in our basement! passing it on to the kids and grandkids and one of our son in laws plays in a great cover band and is terrific musician himself, so we are INTO it.

      Rock on dude and catch some big slabs along with it!

      Been bangin my head to all of the bands mentioned since I was about 12. Large collection of CD's keep me in touch with what I like. From Thelonius Monk to AC-DC there is no telling who you'll find in there. Have a stack of ticket stubs from when I was younger and crowd tolerant. Black Sabbath and Peter Frampton was one show I remember as one of the better. My younger daughter enjoys a lot of the music I had on while she grew, and was in the school band for a long time. In one conversation that she reminds me of sometimes, she fussed about not getting her music on the car radio. She claimed that this new song was cool, when it was a remake of one from my era. I told her that she needed to pay attention to what I played, and of course she asked why. I said something like How do you know where you're going if you don't know where you came from? The things we pass along.........
