Enough about the company, on to the rod, the Duck Commander DOUBLE-TOUCH Crappie Rod was designed by guess who, the Duck Dynasty Robinson Family. These guys love crappie fishing and were fans of B’n’M Poles. It became a natural fit to bring these two brands together. Jack commissioned them to design and test an entire series of trolling, spinning, ultralight and telescopic rods to their expectations.
They took the Touch System – a cutout in the handle allowing you to place your finger directly on the rod blank giving you the advantage when the bite is light – and expanded it to a double touch. If you like to jig in tight places this is the rod for you. When I’m out in open water I use the cutout closest to the reel seat, when I’m in tight to boat docks I use the cutout near the end of the handle. When the bite is solid, I don’t need the touch, I can place my hand anywhere on the handle.
This rod has excellent balance when paired with Buck’s Ultralight Crappie Reel. This reel weighs 1.6 oz and has a 1:1 gear ration. Here're a few of the highlights of this fine rod:
- 40 Million Modulus IM6 Graphite Blank – Making it a much lighter rod with excellent performance. This is one of the higher IM6 modulus rods on the market, making it super-light, responsive, extremely sensitive and strong. The blank is thick enough to withstand a lot of abuse. This rod will not break under normal use, but if you step on it, that’s a different story.
- Unique “Double-Touch” System – The Double-Touch is what attracted me to this rod. The Touch System was supposedly invented by Grenada Lake Crappie Guide John Harrison, according to Jack Wells, John took a BGJP jig pole and sawed off the handle at the reel seat with a hacksaw, then took his pocket knife and cut out the EVA handle so his finger could touch the blank. This gave him the ability to detect the lightest bites. Guess it’s true, necessity is the mother of invention.
- Genuine Portuguese Cork Handle – Cork handles give a rod a high-end rod fee, cork is easy to clean, plus cork don’t deteriorate nearly as fast as EVA foam and and it looks great..
- Dyna-Flo Stainless Steel Guides – These guides offer smooth line flow; they’re much lighter thereby not adding any extra weight to the rod. Dynaflo guides make any rod perform better, they are stronger yet much lighter than ceramic guides. The inner rings can’t pop out.
- Chartreuse Depth-Monitoring Wraps – These high-vis wraps are placed every foot from the tip down to the handle. You can easily tell how deep you’re fishing in an instant. I’ve always marked up my jig pole either with tape or a magic-marker but I could not get it to last very long, not anymore, this rod comes standard with high-vis warps that can be seen in low-light conditions.
Finally, if you’re looking for a versatile jigging rod that can be used in open water or in tight situations, the Duck Commander DOUBLE-TOUCH Crappie Rod is the one you should add to your jigging arsenal. B’n’M offers 4 sizes, 8’, 10’, 11’ and 12’. My personal preference is a 10’ or 11’ model. I can cover all my jigging situations with these two sizes. When I’m jigging open-water brush piles, I usually have one in each hand. This is one rod that makes jig fishing fun, don’t just take my word, try it for yourself. Bernard, Outdoor Writer
