• I am (finally) a Crappie fisherman!

The monkey is off my back! I had never caught a crappie, until today.
I have been a fisherman for about 50 years, starting with my grandpa when I was 7. I've caught most freshwater species and a few of the ocean variety, but the little ole demure crappie just never got on my hook. I joined this forum a few years back to learn what the heck I needed to do, and still I continued to not be able to cross the crappie off my list.

Today I went fishing with a friend, who like probably others reading this, could not believe my lack of success. We hit Morrison Lake near Saranac about 7:00 a.m. Air temp was 30 degrees and a fog was upon the water. My friend and I each had a jig with a minnow on our rods (4) and he landed the first one about 9:00 a.m. that was all for the next 2 hours, then he landed 2 more. I was once again feeling this was not going to be the day. I switched one of my lines to a bare hook, sinker and a slip bobber then impaled a minnow on my bare hook.....and waited. About 10 minutes I had my first ever crappie! My friend took a picture and I sent it off to my wife and also to Rich. Rich sent a txt back congratulating me and bam I had another one on.

At the end of the day I caught 4 crappie, my friend caught 5. They were all between 9-10 inches. My friend gave me his 5 so I now have a nice mess of crappie fillets in the freezer.

Good catch it is not as easy to catch crappies up here in the north in the fall. Spring time is the exception as in all places.

You're hooked now.......just like those crappie you caught and those minnows you impaled! Nothing you can do about it now except go out and do it again, and again, and again. There's nothing like crappie fishing and tightening up on a "sho nuff slab." You'll know when it's time to grab for the dip net. Welcome to the crappie club. GTT
