  • Crappie Spawing Habits question.

Fished Santee on Sat. water temp 52 when I got there got up to 55 when I left. All fish caught in 30 feet of water 16 to 20 feet down live bait only kept 15. now on to my ? all the fish and I mean all 15 fish where female and all of the ladies had eggs in them so my ? is. Do crappie spawn more them one time a year? Or will they hold the eggs until the spring or does the weather have them messed up? If the 15 I got on sat. had eggs I am sure that there are more swimming around with them as well. I know some body has the answer most of you guys have been fishing for more years than I am old. No pun intended please help!!!!!

Those eggs are for the 2015 spring spawn. You will see them in most all the female crappie you catch in the winter.

Nice catch and a good crappie in the pic.

I also believe the black crappie will spawn quicker once its spawning time than do the whites.....As another already said the eggs are for the spring, and they will hold them throughout the winter but spring spawn will still come very early for large black crappie. Just my 2 cents.

The Crappies I caught up here in NC (Falls Lake) this past Sunday had about the same egg development. Those are for this spring. Take another pic of the Females you catch in March/April and they'll be MUCH bigger. Also, Take some of those egg sacks, bread'em and fry them up! Excellent appetizer :D

NOTHING like some good good ole fried crappie roe! Better fry them with a lid or either poke them with forks because they will pop much like chicken livers.
